CURRENT WHEAT SCENARIO

Wheat production for the year 2015-16 is estimated at 90 plus million tones with the procurement target of 33.1 million tones. Procurement target fixed in light of the last year’s procurement of 28.02 million tones.

MSP fixed for the year 2015-16 - Rs.1450/- vs MSP for 2014-15 –Rs.1400/- increasing it by Rs.50/- per quintal.

Actual procurement for the year 2015-16 stands at 27.62 million tones with Punjab contributing 9.95, Haryana 6.75, U.P. 2.26, M.P. 7.26, Rajasthan 1.42 and Gujarat 0.96 million tones approx.

Unseasonal rains in major wheat producing states – Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh affected the wheat crop adversely, resulting in, luster lost and shriveled grain. Procurement norms relaxed for the year with moisture content upto 16% to support the farmers cause.

Opening wheat stocks at the central pool stood at 17.22 million tones as on 1st April, 2015 against the buffer norms of 4 plus 3 million tones
National requirement for PDS and other welfare schemes is pegged at 23.5 million tones whereas national wheat consumption is projected as 76 million tones.
The rain affected current year crop with higher moisture content and under developed grain (shriveled) is bound to have a shorter shelf life affecting the quality of wheat products adversely, hence needs to be blended with sound wheat to meet the end product quality specifications.
